Brilliant and very daring essay, Pallavi. Ranked-choice voting which lets voters rank candidates by preference could be a more palatable alternative. If no one wins a majority of first-choice votes, the lowest-ranked candidate is eliminated and their votes get redistributed, repeating until someone achieves over 50%. As an example, the June  2025 Democratic mayoral primary in New York City was won by Zohran Mamdani, a relative underdog, who secured 56% of the vote after subsequent rounds of ranked-choice tabulation.
