I loved the article on Hindu epics in a Muslim country. I have been choreographing themes and enacting the less well-known stories and characters from the Hindu epics. Your description was so vivid that I could visualize the entire scene. Thanks.

Love the narrative..

A few facts that could be relooked at though. Hinduism didn't exist back then, buddhism was the predominant religion in Asia. All the characters of ramayana and mahabharata existed in the jataka tales that were written to portray morals to kids, as we had a rational ohtlook back then.

The brahmins post the 14th century plaigarized these tales and attached it to the pantheon.

Shadow puppetry still exists as far north as southern Thailand although it's struggling. I tried to find a performance when visiting Nakhon Si Thammarat about a decade ago, but failed even though I was assured there was a practising puppet master in the city. It was perhaps the wrong time of year or plain bad luck. It's heartening to know that the art from can still command large audiences and fees in Java.
