I must confess that this is just the second time that I have seen the word "palimpsest" being used. Not that it should mean anything - I am anything but a well-read person !
Long, long ago, whilst reading Jawaharlal Nehru's "Discovery of India" I did chance upon that word and it sent me scurrying to a dictionary.
On India, Nehru had the following to say:
"She was like some ancient palimpsest on which layer upon layer of thought and reverie had been inscribed, and yet no succeeding layer had completely hidden or erased what had been written previously.."
A Viennese café gives you that Austro-Hungarian atmosphere that a Starbucks will never be able to create ...
Very true!
You had me at palimpsest.
