Dear Pallavi,

the issue you raise is humongous. Therefore, first things first. Let me begin by wishing you the best for the end-of-game treatments.

NATO emerged at the beginning of the Cold War as a *regional* alliance at par with CENTO, SEATO and what else. All those alliances vanished, and the USA relied on NATO to help project its power *worldwide*. Admittedly, the European countries were complicit, first in the Balkans, then with D2P. They tolerated the US using NATO bases for Iraq and Afghanistan. The basic conflict is here. NATO should never go *out of area.* Why German fighter planes flew into the Indo-Pacific is beyond my understanding.

Never forget the nefarious influence of the US armaments industry, selling boondoggles like F35 to everyone willing to buy on a "cost+" basis. Remember, in the US there never was a peace dividend in the 90es, and certainly no drop in international weapons sales.

NATO must return to its original purpose. And France must share its nuclear capability with other European countries. This, she is unwilling to do - hence Germany buying F35 to be able to deliver US tactical nuclear bombs at the US' behest (as in 1954 agreements). Forget the UK. The UK are militarily a failed state (their Tridents failed tests and their carriers have all sorts of terminal problems) and still dream of the "special relation" with the US.

NATO should face the 2% of budget target for defence. It's a myth. By accepting the exchange rate of 1 DM to 1 EDM in 1989, Germany transferred 1 trillion marks to the east for security, and raising by 100 billion each year. This is security money well spent.

Have a glorious weerk-end
