Many Indias and but for the good fortune that it’s since recently all under a single flag and constitution can imagine how much worse it could have been. A balkanised sub-continent with issues on migration, costs of standing armies and endless trade and riparian disputes. That’s a huge consolation.
That’s my standard spiel - has a hopeful ring, after all we were some 200 princely states in 1947 🙂
As always long term natural demographic shifts will bring more hopeful outcomes !!
Incidentally the same demographic shifts across Europe and SE Asia, Russia etc is creating a different type of misery !!
